Finding Writing Jobs Online

Despite what other people may insist on telling you, it’s not very easy finding a writing opportunity online that actually pays. Some freelance writers may make it all sound like such a breeze, but trust me, it’s not.

My foray into online job hunting began two years ago, when my offline resources started to dry up a bit. I was looking for a real job in the physical world when I came upon a job posting that was looking for academic writers. At that time I thought it paid well, but only because I wasn’t well-informed. It kept me afloat for nearly a year, until I finally found a job.

Last year, I decided that I needed to exert a little more effort and earn a bit more apart from my day job’s salary. My dad was forced to retire, and I had to help out. I tried listings, bidding sites like Get a Freelancer and forums. So far, I can say I’ve been successful in ferreting out opportunities for earning. Here’s a few tips I can give you, from one persistent jobhunter to another:

1. Check out listings with caution. I found Steve Park, the scammer I mentioned a while back, on Craigslist. It’s not that Craigslist isn’t dependable; it’s just that there’s virtually no guarantee that’ll ensure the reliability of the client. Same goes for other listings. Keep your common sense sharp at all times.
2. Join forums. There are forums about actors, movies, schools and whatnot, but have you ever tried joining a forum solely dedicated to writing or earning through it? If not, then you’re missing out. Filipino writers have a very good support group (PinoyMoneyTalk, for example), with writers routinely informing their fellows of jobs that pay. I found two of my academic writing gigs through a forum, and even got a brief content writing job, too. Be sure to participate and not just lurk, though. Ask questions. They’ll be more than willing to answer.
3. Check out bidding sites. Get a Freelancer and other similar sites offer a variety of job opportunities, as they allow clients to post their needs on the site. The bidders then compete to gain the client’s attention. That said, these sites take a cut, of course, from your total earnings. Also, it’s pretty difficult to get a project here, what with all the Indian nationals bidding as low as a dollar for 500-word essays. It’s difficult, but there are people who have succeeded. Keep bidding and you might just find a few extra contacts and boost your money-making network.
4. Search freelancing websites. Most sites, like mine, talk about a variety of freelance opportunities. You get the added bonus of insight, too, as bloggers will often include their experiences. This way, you not only get information, you even find out which ones to avoid.
5. Google is your friend. You might want to search for “freelance writing jobs” through this massive search engine. Quite a number of things will easily come up. You’ll have to wade through the onslaught of data though.

Good luck on your job hunt! It takes a lot of patience, energy and a keen eye to get the opportunity you need.
